Gender Neutral Nursery

When I took on this project there were only a couple stipulations the homeowners had for the design.  It had to be gender neutral and I had to use a crib and existing dresser they had.  That was  it.  The rest, I was to do what I felt best for their room.  Ok…so let me tell you that this rarely happens to a designer or at least to me.  To have an oppurtunity like this can be both exciting and challenging at the same time.  The homeowners have to be pretty trusting of your sense of style to give up control and this…they told me they were.  And as much as I said I had a lot of freedom as far as asthetics go I did not have as much freedom when it came to the budget…which was tight. So that created some more challenges.

I started with the art (the same artist as I used in my daughter’s nursery) and pulled my color & inspiration from there.  I had two paint colors custom made and painted swatches on the wall  for us to choose from.  Both the colors were beautiful and would work well in the room.  The homeowner teetered back and forth making a decision and in the end, they let me decide which way to go.  So the green I chose and BOLD it was!  This nursery may have needed to be GENDER neutral but it certainly did not have to be NEUTRAL!  We actually ended up using the other color on the ceiling with a white crown to break up the two. I’m normally not a paint the ceiling kinda Gal…but I’m warming up to the idea in the right setting.  The crib bedding was custom made my the homeowner’s Mom and she also re-upholstered the glider.  Didn’t she come in quite handy?!?!  I paired the glider with a custom made pillow with felt buttons for an entirely new look as it’s orginal solid, sage green fabric.

The dresser…well let’s talk about the dresser.  It basically was your old standard honey-oak dresser.  It was already painted white when I got my mitts on it but I wanted to take the makeover a step further.  I’ll go into more detail in another post of  how I re-vamped the old Gal.  Gal?  You ask how do I know it’s a Gal not a Guy?  Because it had a floral carving detail on the top center drawer….another obstacle I had to tackle.  The wood grain technique I used was applied only after my first idea had gone COMPLETELY downhill.  But, it turned out better than I had originally hoped for so it seemed to happen for a reason!

I love making bow and ribbon boards for my nurseries but since this nursery needed to be for both a boy or a girl, I decided to make it double duty as a bow/photo bulletin board.  I love how it turned out and it created such a great feature in the room.

This was such a fun project to work on and I enjoyed every minute of it.  It is now home to a beautiful little lady but could equally house a tiny gentlemen as well.

  • You amaze me with your talent. I would love to sit you down and get inside your head as to how all these amazing design details came to you. Did you make the ribbon board yourself? So fun! I love the paint colors and just love looking at every inch of the room in the photos. Great job!
