I’m not feeling incredibly wordy tonight.  This gorgeous Boho Baby shower we threw has been sitting as a draft on my computer  for WAY too long.  It was in honor of  Milk Glass Vintage Rentals, PJ and her Little Lady.  So I’ll just get the ball rolling and let the photos speak for themselves.

Teacher Appreciation Gift-Caricature Notecards

Can we please get in our time machines and go back to June…you know the time of year you hand your kids’ teachers their gifts for all of their hard work?  Because that is when I made these and it’s now NOVEMBER (how is it NOVEMBER going on DECEMBER?).  I figured I’d still throw these up because sometimes parents are looking for teacher Holiday present ideas and these might come in handy for that.  So every time I have given my daughters pre-school teachers a gift, they’ve always responded back so graciously with a thank you card.  I though it might be cute to get them some personalized thank you card being that they have to write so many throughout the year.   I placed the notecards and envelopes in plastic baskets I found at Target. With each notecard set I included a pen (that also had the caricature on them) as well as a DVD that held the caricature images in case they wanted to make more notecards when they ran out.  I wrapped the whole thing both vertically and horizontally with some rainbow twine and voila…a fun gift and package all in one!   The teachers were all so excited to see these caricatures of themselves and it was a fun unique gift to be able to give them.

SUPPLY LIST & SOURCES
CARCICATURE DESIGN-NOTECARDS & PENS: Vistaprint I also purchased the separate caricature file so I could print myself on my disc label.
PATTERNED SCRAPBOOK PAPER: I used the Moroccan Prints Digital Paper Pack from PrettifulDesigns on ETSY and printed it myself.
ENVELOPE:  I made my own by cutting an 8.5×11 sheet of cardstock and rounding the sides but you can purchase any type of envelope pocket at your craft store.
BASKETS: Room Essentials Storage Bin from Target.  I bought in the store and didn’t need to buy a set of 4 like it says online. 
YARN-TWINE or RIBBON: I used the Deborah Norville Serenity Garden Gems yarn.  I bought it at Joann Fabrics but don’t see it there anymore.
CD or DVD’s plus printable sticker labels for them
FULL SHEET STICKER PAPER: to print the caricatures on for the sticker to close the envelope.  You could also just print on circle labels.
CIRCLE PUNCHES: To cut out  stickers for envelope if you used full sheet sticker paper.
GEL DOTS: To hold the DVD to the paper. You stick them to the paper and them pop the DVD hole through them. I’m not sure where to find these.  My friend gave me a bunch that she had.

Interior Design Concept & Process

Many times when I first start speaking with clients, they don’t exactly understand the design process, how I work, or what they really get for their money.  I really like to educate my clients on what they are investing into their spaces as well as me.  What a designer can bring to the table can be invaluable for clients.  We not only provide a beautiful and functional room in the end but also eliminate stress and mistakes that homeowners designing their own spaces many times go through.  We guide you through the endless amounts of furnishings and accessories available nowadays and find the right pieces for you.  We do much more than pair pretty things together, we manage your project from start to finish.

Now every designer is going to have their own design process and ways of managing their projects but I thought it would be fun to share with you how I work.

Initial meeting with the client::  After a client knows for sure that they want to hire me, I meet with them in their home, measure, take photographs and develop a scope of work.  I am also interviewing them and am really trying to get a feel for what they want out of their space.

Design Concept::  After I’ve gathered all the necessary information, I get to work on their design.  I normally gather items and use Pinterest to bookmark the image and website of the possible item.  You can see the Pinterest board that goes along with the below mood boards { HERE }.  I usually over gather items and then widdle down.  I then present what my favorites are for the space.  The great thing about having the extras is that if a client doesn’t like one of the choices, I already have backups that I can pull up quickly as alternatives.  I create mood boards with the final items and have my drafter do the space-planning in CAD with those specifications.

Here is an example of a mood board and its floor plan to go along with it.  The mood board isn’t always going to be the exact outcome of the room but is more so of a general design idea to present to my client so they can understand the overall concept and get my vision.

 

Design Presentation:: It’s now time to present the design concept to my client.  I provide a binder to each client with all of their mood boards, floor-plans, spec sheets for each item and a budget.  This binder is for my clients to keep which is great for them to take a long to check out any items in person and it also creates a record of their room.  Along with the binder, I bring along loose samples to show colors in person.  This can include fabric, paints, rugs, leathers, window treatments etc.  After the presentation, we either make changes right then and there or I let the design resinate before they make final decisions.  Every client is different so I like to allow them the time they need to feel comfortable in making decisions.  If changes need to be made, then we go over them.  Below is an example of some changes that were made after the original presentation.  The chairs and coffee tables were swapped for other items due to both taste and budget.

 

Design Procurement:: After decisions have been made on all of the larger items, we get to ordering.  While waiting for furnishings to arrive, I get to work on finalizing the smaller details like accessories, art etc.  I shop and collect tons of goodies to complete the room and really set off the design. This is also when any painting, or installation of lighting would be done.

Design Install::  On the day of install, all furniture is placed, art hung and accessories styled.  It can take a good portion of the day to complete one room many times.

So that’s it…I gave you the condensed version.  There are actually what feels like 5 million additional steps in this process but many are for me to worry about while my clients sit back and dream about their beautiful new room.  And as you can see, I do not sit around eating bon bons all day as my husband likes to tease me that I do!

Little Bit Magazine Feature

I am so very excited to have not one but two designs included in Issue 4 of Little Bit Magazine.  Little Bit is a quarterly digital magazine filled with all things related to children’s design.  I read a lot of online magazines and this one is truly great!  Simple layouts, amazing photography and such inspirational ideas from all of the contributors.  It was extra exciting for me that Jennifer Skog was right there with me on the contributor’s page.  Anytime I can share in some success with my BFF it makes it all the better!  A big thanks to Aisha from Little Bit for including our work in this issue.

Should You Paint Your Oak Cabinets?

I wanted to use this kitchen re-furbish as a teaching lesson as much as I just want to share with you the beautiful outcome!

Many times, I get clients wanting to do partial kitchen and bath remodels.  Meaning they want to keep existing cabinets and just do flooring and countertops.  Or keep floors and just do floors and cabinets.  My advice DON’T!  In the beginning of my career, I let clients do this over and over again and the results always looked like something was still old.  I have seen instances where the room turned out OK but many times…it doesn’t.  I always suggest people either wait until they have the budget to remodel right or go simple with their new selections. If you try and make something older looking newer (like installing modern glass mosaics in a kitchen with honey oak cabinets) it will just look off.   The alternative to replacing an entire set of oak cabinets is to paint them. It can make a tremendous difference in the result.  And you aren’t doing this to necessarily save money, you are doing this for the good of your design!  A good painter won’t be inexpensive but this is one area you don’t want to skimp.

Luckily these clients were on board with painting the cabinets from the get go but they did want to keep their existing floor tiles.  You’ll see whey I really pushed them to replace it later in this post.

The style of this home overall is traditional.  The goal was to keep it traditional yet modern.

I get apprehension from some clients about subway tile.  Of course it is not for everyone but if you are open to it, your kitchen will stay classic rather than be dated 7 years down the road by installing the latest fad.  I love subway tiles and their are so many options as far as colors and textures that there really is a right option to fit any style of decor.  They are also the perfect contrast to a busier granite.  It is imperative to use a tile with your granite that will not compete against it.  If you are a granite lover, let it shine and be the star of the show.  Otherwise your eye will be overloaded and not have anywhere to focus in the room.

The floor tiles are a porcelain limestone look so they will be easy to maintain…no sealing.  The offset rectangular pattern modernized the stone look. Another way we blended some modern into the traditional was with the chandelier in the eating area.  Drum shades always add a modern touch to a chandelier.

Woven wood shades added texture to the space as well as brought in some contrast to an otherwise light space.  I like how they balanced out the darkness from the homeowners existing wooden hutch on the opposite side of the room,

Both the floor and the granite had a slight green undertone to it so I we selected a that tone of beige for the paint.  The wall in this image looks a little off but in person it really looks great.  It’s Sherwin Williams Ecru 6135.

And now…get ready….for the before shots. Quite a transformation wouldn’t you agree?

And remember when I talked about how originally the homeowners wanted to keep the existing tile?  Well, here it was.  12×12 ceramic beige tiles.  The first and foremost reason I stressed we needed to change it was that it had a pink undertone to it and all of the granites we were interested in were in the gold/green family.  By far, the number one mistake I see being made in homes, is people not understanding the undertones in beige.  The second reason I suggested the tile be changed was that is was a 12×12 in a fairly large kitchen.  It was really too small and busy for  the scale of the space.  In the end the homeowners agreed and were so happy they made room in the budget to allow for a new floor.  I cannot imagine this tile with the rest of that new beautiful kitchen!

And one after again so I don’t leave you with pink tile!

Baby Shower:Winnie UN-Pooh

I thought my baby shower designing was over for friends after I finished by BFF Jennifer Skog’s baby shower.  But NO…the baby’s keep coming! This time it was for my Sister in Law Teri and my soon to be nephew.  With a large guest list the parties got split and I, along with the soon to be Grandmas (my Mom Lauren and Teri’s Mom Donna) got to work.  My sister in law is AWESOME, I’m very lucky to have her and I’m not just saying this because she lets me do whatever I want to her house and her parties =)  She always tells me “I trust you”.  ACK how nerve racking to live up to that and not disappoint? But, I always seem to make her happy and that makes me happy!

Her only request was that she did NOT want a Winnie the Pooh shower.  But, she wanted Winnie the Pooh.  Huh…scratching head?  I took this as she did not want a Pooh explosion or your typical Pooh themed party materials…fine by me!  My Pooh skills were a bit rusty being in my almost mid thirties.  Did I really just say that?  After some quick research (how did I ever survive before Google?) I remembered that Pooh and his buds lived in the “100 Acre Woods“.  There was my ticket.  I could focus on creating a beautiful woodsy theme and just splash Pooh and the gang while using references like honey.  That is why I entitled this post Winnie UN Pooh. Because the Pooh is scarce.

I really didn’t want to use any cartoon Poohs so that made splashing him in a challenge.  I found a terra cotta Pooh statue on eBay and I knew that it would be an awesome focal point for my room.  What I did not want to be a focal point in the room, was the ugly conference room white board stuck on the wall. So I used a fabric wrapped canvas to hide the eye-sore.  A tree branch I drug home from the creek by my house (with a toddler and dog in tow…boy was I a sight for my neighbors) and a chalkboard sign were just the right additions to setting my theme.

 

Tree stumps and wooden discs were used throughout the shower.  They were the perfect way to layer my tables.  For another layering tool I used some book boxes I found at Ross. They were originally in a Paris theme but I recovered them with fabric and made faux leather book spines.  I then added various Winnie the Pooh book names that I made on the computer and topped them off with metal label holders with brads.  This was one of my favorite details of this shower.  And let’s talk about these adorable cakes.  I found this Beehive cake idea from Martha Stewart and knew it was just perfect!  Janice (Teri’s Aunt) so graciously donated her skills to make this happen.  They turned out so great.

I stenciled a Winnie the Pooh quote on the dessert table runner.  I really feel like every Mother feels this way toward their children.  It read…

Our guests took home honey jars as their party favor.  The labels read “Thanks from the Mama-to-bee”.  Again I didn’t want to use typical Pooh cartoon characters in the shower so I found coloring book drawings and printed them onto weathered paper to use on signs throughout the shower.  The huge tree trunk still had live moss on it. I was ECSTATIC when my Aunt and Mom brought this home from a trip to my Dad’s.  Yes, I was flipping my lid over a Mossy tree stump….what can I say…it’s the little things for me.  I kept paying visits to it in the garage to check that the moss would last until show time and it DID!

I used a grouping of three wooden place mats as the runner down each table setting.  I alternated napkins under each plate.  One was a solid turquoise with a gold beaded trim and the other, a buttery yellow with s subtle white contemporary pattern.  Chalkboard name cards with feathers and raffia trails sat on each plate.  Accessories like birdcages, snails and tin buckets filled with evergreens helped in aiding my woodsy feel.

 

For food we wanted to keep it simple.  Since we were attending this party we had a lot to do for set up and keeping the menu manageable meant more fun during the shower for us!  But, just because the food is simple does not mean it needs to look like you didn’t slave over it.   We bought rotisserie chickens and mango sausages from Costco that we used as our main course.  Accompanied by spinach salad (a family recipe), fruit kabobs, fresh corn salad, salt and pepper potato chips and biscuits with honey butter.  It was delicious, looked great and gave our shower a sort of down home woodsy feel.  Our guests did not go home hungry!  The turquoise fabric was made into a runner and is what I used to create my color palette for the shower. Turquoise, gold, brown, black and kelly green.

Our beverage station held sweet tea, water with cucumber and wine for guest to help themselves to.

We had all the guests address their own envelopes for the busy Mama to use for her Thank you cards.

We had such a great time and I was so happy to see how this design turned out.  Big thanks to my worker bee Grandmas, Jennifer Skog, Janice Williams for our adorable cakes and Lori and Eddie our laborers during set up and cleanup.

Jennifer Skog’s Vintage Picnic Baby Shower

This baby shower wasn’t for just anyone…this baby shower was for THEE Jennifer Skog…wedding Photographer extraordinaire AND my best friend.  She will most likely kill me for saying it like that but it’s fine…I’m her number one fan =)  Anyways, there are two reasons this shower needed to be the most amazing shower.  And no, it is not because of my amazing baby shower.   First, Jen has donated so much of her time and energy to so many of her friends in both life and their industries.  She photographs their families, children, pregnant bellies, events, portfolio pieces…you name it…she’s shot it.  She’s helped so many of us in capturing special moments in our lives as well as provided so many of us vendors with great images for our businesees.  Secondly, Jen had a very hard road to becoming a mother.  She was actually pregnant at the same time as I was with Sydney but lost her little one.  Though heart wrenching to watch me go one without her, she NEVER showed it, she stood by me through my pregnancy, shot the birth of my daughter, stepped in when I needed support with my colicky baby, listened to all my complaing about having a difficult baby and captured my Sydney Beans growing up these past two years with beauftul photographs that I will cherish forever. So, this shower HAD to be amazing…I’d accept nothing less and Jen deserved it.  It was time to celebrate that it was finally her turn.

Jen loves all things vintage so I came up with the concept Vintage Picnic.  She then told me that there were quite a few of her friends from the wedding industry that wanted to help and donate their services for the shower.  Wow!  I was also told that the shower was going to be held at Casa Real since there were too many people to host it at someone’s house.  Ok, so this is where I started sweating a bit.  After a site visit to Casa, I was croaking a little more.  How was I to create and intimate baby shower in a room huge enough to hold weddings in?  That’s where PJ of Milk Glass Vintage Rentals came in.  I needed stuff to fill up this room and not just any old stuff,  BEAUTIFUL vintage finds to support my vintage picnic theme.  Her red armoire was pretty much the starting point for my color scheme.  I then paired it with some turquoise, brown and cream.  Next I had florals on my mind.  For some reason I really hadn’t envisioned tons of flowers for this picnic, I needed height for the room, and wanted a sort of outdoorsy, earthy feel.  When I met with Nicole of  Nicole Ha Designs I told her I wanted primarily succulents (if you read my blog you know I’m a fanatic about them) with pops of red flowers here and there.  I completely trusted Nicole to make my vision come to life (I don’t do this with just anyone) and I’ll say, she sure hit the nail on the head!  Her manzanita branches were perfect for giving me the height I wanted for the room.  I adorned them with hanging balls wrapped with yarn as well grapvine balls.  When Nicole arrived that day, she added little ceramic birds that I just loved.  Casa’s long wooden tables resembled picnic benches to me so I used them un-clothed and set them in one long row for a dramatic effect and to fill up our room.  I found wooden, lacey fans that I sat at each place setting and strung with handmade fabric tassels.

As the guests entered they were welcomed with a sign designed by Susanne of Cards de Luxe.  We requested that they sign the guest book for Jen, a vintage photo album I found on Etsy.  I wrapped the pen with burlap and stuck a red feather in it to give it an older feel.

 

We served champagne that could be paired with lavender infused simple syrup.  Lavender sprigs garnished the glasses and smelled incredible as the glass tipped back to your nose.  Iced Tea, chilled water and old fashioned soda pop bottles were also available and were displayed so nicely atop  PJ’s vintage door platform.

The food catered by Casa Real was DELICIOUS.  The Menu included Chicken salad sliders, tomato basil & mozzarella and cucumber mint tea sandwiches, spinach frittata, green leaf salad, crudite,  strawberries and homemade potato chips.  Oh…the potato chips…you could’nt eat just one! 

For favors I found wooden berry baskets that we loaded with fresh berries, mini jam jars and scones baked by Jen’s Mom Toni.  The jar lids were wrapped with the same fabric from our fan tassles and tied off with barber pole twine.

Our game questionaire was dolled up by Jen’s sister Lindsay of  Pretty Me Chic.  I found these printable “Merci” tags designed by Amy Moss on her Eat Drink Chic Blog.  You should really check it out…so many pretty little things…so inspirational!

For dessert we had an assortment of flavored bundt cakes set on a tower trimmed with crochet lace.  Or if extra sugar was preferred, you could grab a chocolate cupcakes with champagne frosting and adorned with candied buttons.  I didn’t choose….I sampled both!  All baked with love by Jen’s Mom Toni…or as I call her, “my resident baker.”

Jen’s baby dresses were were hung from PJ’s vintage shutters and sat next to her as she opened her presents.  We were also extremely lucky to have Fantasy Sound provide all the lighting which created such a dramatic effect and showcased all of our vignettes and details perfectly.

Jen, our guest of honor.  I have no idea how we told her apart becuase there were TEN other pregnant girls there!

A special thanks to all of our friends and vendors who donated their specialties and really made this day possible.  Maria Chang of PMA for getting us all up and running.  A’ Lisa, Lindsay, Bob & Toni Skog…my laborers…I’m sorry I always work you guys to the bone.  And Lauren…my Mom, who did a TON of baby sitting my kiddo, freeing up this busy Mama to design and plan away!

What Can Hourly Design Do For You?

I think most people in general think it’s all or nothing with designers.  Either you hire them to work on your entire space or nothing at all!  Well, it doesn’t have to be that way.  In fact most designers provide hourly consultations and the hours can be used for whatever the client needs assistance with.  A good portion of my business is hourly consultations, especially in this economy where hiring a designer for full design is a luxury most cannot indulge in.  I have clients who have me come to their home for just a few hours, to get them moving in the right direction.  I have others who will work out their entire design themselves and then just consult with me before making final purchases in order to eliminate mistakes.  I’m their little insurance policy!  An hour or two of consultation can be a lot cheaper than having to re-do bad design choices. 

Let’s take a look at a bathroom for Meg Sexton, a client for whom hourly consultation was a great help.  She had a general idea of the look she was going for but was overwhelmed with finalizing all the details and needed a little guidance.  She had already chosen white subway tiles for the shower walls as well as the vanity.   Yet to be decided was flooring, an accent for the shower walls, faucet/lighting  fixtures and paint.  We started with the floor tile.  We found a dark brownish-taupe tile that had an almost metallic overlay on it.  The metallic is subtle but just adds a touch of polish without the floor becoming glossy.  Next, I found her a limestone mosaic that we had installed as a border in the shower.  We originally wanted something with less beige in it but I found this as a remnant and it had the right price tag attached to it.  It turns out I actually like the mix of warm and cool tones in it.  It helps tie together the mix of them going on in the rest of the bathroom.  Before we move on from the tiling, please take a look at the tile on both the floor and walls.  In the shower, it’s installed all the way up to the ceiling.  Always run your tile to the ceiling….it just looks better!   As far as the floor tile I like to use the largest tile the space will allow for.  Here is the rule, “The larger the tile, the larger it makes the area look”.  It’s an illusion for your eye.  I’ve gone head to head with clients on this one. I’m not generally a bragger but on this topic, I’ve always been right!  Plus…think less grout…less cleaning. I never use anything smaller than a 12×12 for flooring unless it’s a mosaic and if a 12×12 is chosen by a the client I advise them to use a 12×18 instead.  You’ll get the same full amounts of tiles laid side to  side as a 12×12 but a 12×18 just seems to have a more updated look to it.

Warming Up A Sterile Office

I have never understood why the majority of commercial offices are so dang cold.  And in cold I’m not talking about temperature I’m talking about the feel of it design wise.  One of the reasons I went into design was because I loved how the design of a room could not only impact a person visually but also mentally.  I find it even more important to have a warm and inviting office when its use is for the medical industry.  I see it time and time again.  White walls, grey commercial carpet usually with burgundy or blue office chairs.  I’ll also bet it’s adorned with some terrible photography with some sort of inspirational quote underneath it.  Oh…and don’t forget…it’s probably hung 2 feet higher on the wall than it should be! 

Many patients have enough anxiety when going to their appointments and I wish more doctors, dentists, therapists etc would understand that by creating a warmer environment for their patients that their overall experience…will make them happier!   My sister-in-law (Teri Sorkin, MFT) is a marriage and family therapist and she enlisted my help in making her office an inviting, safe place where her patients could open up to her.  She supplied the sofa and chair and I shopped for and styled the rest.  Now, a dental or doctors office most likely would not be styled to this extreme but in her industry it works.   

 

I always love infusing natural elements into designs and in this case I created a succulent wall garden to breathe some life into the space.  I found these two wrought iron votive holders for a price I couldn’t turn down, but putting candles in this office…well it just seemed silly.  I still wanted to use them though and swapping rocks and succulents in place of candles completely re-purposed them.  I know using real versus faux flowers is a big debate in the design world buy my motto is to use whatever works best in the space and the person caring for it.  As long as they look VERY realistic then I am OK using faux.  In this case, faux was necessary because succulents just wouldn’t have survived nor would Teri want to maintain them.

 

I feel that styling it is THE most important part of a design and is where the biggest mitakes are made by homeowners.  It is the jewlery for the room and without it…it is missing it’s personality!  Styling is available by the hour and can really transform a space.

Sydney’s 1st Birthday Party

Being that my kid is almost TWO I figured it was about dang time I blogged her FIRST birthday party.  With a large family and my Beany having tons of baby friends, a backyard BBQ was perfect  for our celebration.  And, when I say “our” celebration I mean Brad, The Bean and I.  We were ready to celebrate SURVIVING the first year just as much as The Bean was ready to celebrate turning a whole year old!  I’m not going to lie, we had an extremely rough first 6 months as parents so it was definitely time to party! 

Before I get into the design details, I want to give a big thanks to my BFF Jen & her husband Scott for opening their home for our party!  Jen also helped me with the graphic design elements as well as setting up my master plan!  Jen and her brother Rob photographed all the details as well as our family and friends and I am so thankful to have them.  If you’d like to read about the party in Jen’s own words, you can read about it {HERE}. 

So let’s talk concept.  I’m a dog lover…especially of little dogs and what better dog to incorporate into a BBQ where you’ll be serving hot dogs than a wiener dog?  Browsing the internet for ideas, I found a onesie where the silhouette of a dog was applied to it.  This worked perfectly for a wiener dog and the fact that the dog’s body wrapped around from her front to her back was adorable!  I had my Mom do the sewing since my sewing skills topped out  in the 7th grade making scrunchies.

  

And a first birthday party  just isn’t the same without a tutu in my opinion.  My Mom sewed that as well.  Look at the ribbon detail on the edges…it was A LOT of work and she pulled it off beautifully.  And look at those chubby baby legs…I nibble on them everyday!

    

I wanted to make sure that there was plenty to do for the kiddos and bubbles are always a hit with the little ones.  I came up with the concept of “Bean’s Bubble Bar” and set up a little station with the jars of bubbles.  Each jar had it’s own wand I made from pipe cleaners.  There was a bubble machine blowing bubbles off the table for some extra fun!  The bubbles were loved by the little ones…but weren’t so loved by Jen and Scott…who had their grass killed under the bubble bar!  Wooops, sorry guys. Luckily a little grass seed fixed the problem.

Another thing kids just seem to love is little furniture.  I love it myself but it is just so hard to find cute, unique pieces at affordable prices.  My Aunt Gerri  is great at finding treasures at thrift stores and I believe these used to belong to a school in her area.  She sent me a photo of them and asked me if I wanted them.  They looked nothing like this at the time so I told her as long as I could do a makeover on them…I’d take em!  I’ll follow up with a post with the before and afters later.  Mom and I sewed some pillows using the same fabric as Beany’s onesie.  Accessories…just as important for little people too!

This wrought iron chandelier looked so great hanging from the tree.  The wind would blow the ribbons making it look so whimsical. It was originally brown and rusty but a couple colors in spray paint and it was brought a new life.  Much more kid-ified.

 

I decided to try and make tissue pom poms myself.  I did NOT like this project.  Long, tedious and hurt my fingers! 

 

Favors for the adults were chocolate dipped pretzel rods with white sprinkles.  Favors for the kids were custom made coloring books with homemade dog bone crayons. I really used the fabric as part of the theme just as much as the wiener dog.  I used the the teal, aqua, plum and olive green all throughout the party as well as the flower motif.  I painted un-finished wooden flowers and used them  on both the chandelier as well as this flower pot filled with candy lollipops.

Toni Skog, my BFF’s Mom,  makes the most DELICIOUS cupcakes.  I was originally going to hire someone to make the cupcake cake but then Toni wanted to make it so I abliged.  She came up with this amazing realistic dog head made from marzipan!  I think the direction she went with it was far superior to the image I had visualized.  Isn’t the face and bow so sweet?  And shouldn’t Toni be going into business with her amazing work?   I have Bob and Lindsay Skog to thank as well for this cake….it was a joint effort and the results were SPECTACULAR!!! 

She made a separate smash cake for My Beans and even made me a custom “1″ candle since I couldn’t find one that matched the cake!  Now that’s the kind of detail that is so important to me.  When it was cake time the party girl didn’t put much of a show on…she wasn’t getting as messy as I would have liked.  (That’s the LAST time you’ll hear me say that).  So we placed the cake on the ground for all the other kiddos to take a stab at.  I’m guessing their parents were cursing my name at the time….actually I’m quite sure of it!    Prior to the smashing of the cake, it was displayed with two wooden dogs I painted and dressed up with tutus to match the Birthday girl.

The Hot Dog buffet was setup indoors complete with all the fixins.  Do you recognize those Manzanita branches?  They are great to re-use.  With new decorations added to them, they can breathe a new look into each party.  You can see them at my Baby Shower {HERE} and at another shower I threw {HERE}.

 

The day was a blast and it was so much fun to spend it with family, old friends and new friends we’ve made since Sydney was born.
